Amtrak Penn Coach Yard 30th Street Station Philadelphia PA October 1995

While the rest of the country's long distance routes use (or are able to use) the Superliner equipment, one major city is not on that list. All approaches to Philadelphia used by Amtrak are under wires, and clearance concerns dictate the use of single level equipment on all trains into the City of Brotherly Love. With the double stack clearance project undertaken by Conrail completed in the summer of 1995, Amtrak decided to run a test. In late August of 1995, they brought a Superliner into Philadelphia on the Broadway Limited and the car had no problems along the route except in 30th Street Station. Unfortunately the 93 year old Broadway ceased to exist within weeks, but the lessons learned enabled Amtrak to bring Superliners into the city again in October for display during a travel agents convention. The cars were parked at 30th Street Station along the High Line as Amtrak gave guided tours of their latest equipment.
The two Superliners were Coach 34105 ...
and Transition Sleeper 39017

Amtrak also brought along the first two new Viewliners, 82000 American Way and 82001 Atlantic Way. These cars were based on prototypes built a decade earlier and finally put into production to replace the aging Heritage sleepers.
The new Viewliners sit along side the Heritage coaches of a Clocker, another Philadelphia tradition that will be history at the end of this week.
