CSAO Morrisville Yard Morrisville PA October 5 2005
A visit to what is left of the former Pennsylvania Railroad Morrisville Yard leaves one with a melancholy and monochrome feeling. The wires have been down for over twenty years.
Norfolk Southern's maintenance shop evidently does not stock paint to match the as-delivered primer gray. NS C40-9W 9873, which came out of the plant in April 2004, features "AUTO START" stenciled in red on the cab under the number ......
whereas her younger sister 9938 (October 2004) only has the tiny initials 'AESS", for Auto Engine Start Stop, above the battery box. By doing so, NS and GE has cut the number of letters used by more than half, almost eliminating misspellings, and cut the amount of paint used even more. Now that's efficiency at work.

Also on hand were a pair of GP38-2's, NS 5313 (the former CR 8131) wearing the older style paint scheme....
and NS 5287 (the former CR 8086) in the new Horsehead/Whitebrow scheme. Previously this shot would have featured the Morrisville Yard office in the background, but it was demolished in December 2003 and replaced with a trailer.
In the background is the western end of the New Jersey Transit's Morrisville Yard.
