Railfan Pictures of the Week - 08/28/2005
NS Abrams Yard Upper Merion PA August 27 2005 |
A favorite stop for railfans in the Philadelphia Area is now extremely railfan-unfriendly. I was told that a big reason was families with small children coming here to watch the trains and allowing the little ones to wander close to and even on the tracks, so can't really blame them. |
That said, there are still some opportunities for shots from the edge of the road, that is if you have a good zoom lens and don't mind dodging traffic, as with this picture of a pair of NS D9-40CW's, numbered 9597 and 9555, pulling a westbound through the switches in front of the yard office on its way out of the yard to head up 101 Track to CP Forge. |
Abrams is also one of the few places to see SW-1001's. NS 2110 in its second owner's colors is teamed up with NS 2101 in its third owner's colors. |
The pair are switching a cut of cars containing BVRY, UMP, CR and NS gondolas along with some flat cars with steel plate from the steel plant in Conshohocken and empty box cars that brought newsprint down to the printing plant of the Philadelphia Inquirer in West Conshohocken PA. |
NS 2101 must have been repainted just before the "horsehead" scheme was adopted. Its brother NS 2106 displays the new scheme here. |
NS 2110 wears its battered Conrail colors and interestingly has NS sublettering on the cab (as does 2101) rather than the usual PRR found on most ex-Conrail engines. Also, if you look at the photo above, you can see the yellow and black zebra pattern on 2110's front pilot, a remnant of its Reading Railroad days. |
