Pennsylvania Live Steamers Rahns PA June 26 2005 |
The Pennsylvania Live Steamers is holding its annual open houses on the fourth Sunday of June, July and August. Today was the first of the three and there is nothing like a steaming 90+ degree day to get those boilers working. If you missed it, then mark July 24 and August 28 on your calendar (click here for their full schedule). PLS, which will be celebrating its 60th anniversary next year, is located in Rahns PA, just off the former Reading Railroad's Perkiomen Branch which was abandoned in the late 1970's and is now the Perkiomen Trail. |
The fun starts just as you walk in the front door. If you want a picture to go with the definition of "early steam", this comes to mind. |
Some people are stuck in the 60's, as in the 1860's. |
Others favor the big haulers of the mid-20th century. |
While still others are partial to "honorary steam engines" like this model of Alco RS-1 57. The model is painted in its blue Washington Terminal livery that it also wore on the New Hope and Ivyland Railroad, while the real thing resides in nearby Quakertown PA in East Penn black. |
Of course, even though they are "live steamers", for the fans of electric railroading, no day is complete without an appearance of the famous GG-1. |
