Conrail Abrams Yard Upper Merion PA April 1994 |
Saw some coil cars on NS 14G yesterday and they reminded me of my favorite family of coil cars, the G40 and the G41/G41A built by the PRR in the 1960's. The PRR could not just buy coil cars from the manufacturer. Instead, as with many things at Big Red, they felt they could do it better and built the G40 which begat its smaller brethren, the G41/G41A. As with all coil cars, they originally came with hoods, but by this time they were long gone. |

Conrail G40 606356 (PRR 378000) was built by the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1964 as a one of a kind prototype that led to the development of the G41's. |
