East Penn Bethlehem Branch Quakertown PA April 27 2005 |
Quakertown PA is having its annual Quakertown Arts Alive! festival on May 21 2005 and one of the centerpieces is the restored Reading Company train station. The station was closed after SEPTA discontinued passenger service on the Bethlehem Branch north of Lansdale PA in 1983, and suffered a devastating fire in 1989. In 1990 the Quakertown Train Station Historical Society was formed with the purpose of restoring the building and help in the revitalization of downtown. After a long but ultimately successful struggle to secure funding for the work, almost one million dollars in grants from U.S. Department of Transportation, the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development, the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission and private donations as well as hard work have resulted in a beautiful job. |
The former Reading Company Freight House is mostly intact and used by East Penn Railway. |
Come just to see the famous Quakertown triple tracking project just north of the station. |
