The cars used were built by Sumitomo Corporation of America (aka Sumitomo/Nippon Sharyo) and acquired in 1985 (model MARC II), 1987 (model MARC IIa) and 1991-1993 (model MARC IIb) by the Maryland Mass Transit Administration for MARC. The MARC II cars may have been some of the first coaches produced by the company for the US market. Sumitomo is currently building 300 new coaches and 26 multiple units for Chicago Metra for delivery in 2006. MARC however went to Kawasaki when it ordered 50 bilevel coaches back in 2000-2001. In an interesting twist, in 2003 MARC acquired 16 Chicago METRA bilevel commuter coaches to be used while the Sumitomo MARC IIb cars were overhauled. Here are roster shots of the Sumitomo cars. |
