Railfan Pictures of the Week - 08/15/2004

Amtrak Northeast Corridor Eddington, Croydon and Torresdale PA August 13 2004

Conrail Shared Assets Operations, aka CSAO or Conrail, operates local trains on the Amtrak Northeast Corridor out of Frankford Junction in Philadelphia, and these trains are now covering more territory than they did just a few years ago. This is probably due to changing traffic patterns, mostly industries closing and abandoning the rails. CSAO FJ10 used to travel no farther east on the NEC than the I95 switch, but now can be found as far as Grundy Interlocking. Elf Aquitaine on State Road used to be served off the Eddington Industrial Track, but the facility has been closed for a couple years now. North of Eddington was the I-95 Industrial Track, which along with the Eddington IT and the Linden Avenue siding, had enough cars to keep the crew of FJ10 busy all day. But the I-95 IT is now rusty and the weeds are tall, indicating that the businesses there are no longer receiving cars.

Friday August 13 2004 started with FJ10 calling Amtrak CETC 6 to get a clear signal on the 0 Track at Holmes to do some work. After collecting a few cars, it made a quick trip over to the Bustleton IT (usually work done by FJ4) and back before heading east up to Eddington with a couple cars in tow.
The power consisted of two ex-Conrail engines ..... SW1001 1127 in Bright Future ......
And GP38-2 2814 in Dark Future.
After picking up a string of tank cars at Eddington, FJ10 followed a SEPTA local east on Track 1 to the switch at Croy, just north of Croydon Station.
At Croy, FJ10 backed its train onto Track 5 as an westbound Acela passed on Track 3. The pile of rusty metal to the right in this and the preceding picture is track hardware such as spikes removed from Track 4 in preparation for the TLM, which is now a few miles east near Bristol.
After working at Croy, FJ10 ran up to Grundy before heading west back to Frankford Junction, once again following a SEPTA local. Here it is pictured rounding the curve at Torresdale.
They must have dropped CSX 1127 off at Croy, as it now had CSX 1128 bringing up the rear.
