Railfan Pictures of the Week - 08/17/2003

The former SEPTA PCC 2134, aka the Ice Cream Trolley, is now open for business at The Trolley Car Diner on Germantown Avenue in the Mount Airy section of Philadelphia. In the foreground you can see the tracks of the Route 23 trolley, and in the background left a bridge of the long abandoned Fort Washington Branch of the Pennsylvania Railroad.

The Trolley Car Diner was the site of the Philadelphia Chapter's annual Bill Wagner Summer Dinner, held on August 15 2003. The diner chartered SEPTA's Chestnut Hill Trolley for its grand opening back in October 2001, so the next logical step was, of course, to get one for themselves. A video clip of the charter runs has been uploaded to the Oaks Model Railroad website.

The trolley is painted in PTC Green and Cream with the burgundy belt line and silver roof. Externally, everything is still there, from the trucks to the pole. All it needs is a couple silver headlight wings. It was refurbished at the same facility that is working on the 18 PCC's for SEPTA's Girard Avenue Light Rail Project, Brookville Equipment of Brookville PA. For more information about the future (and past) of trolleys in Philadelphia, check out the Philly Trolley and Railway Preservation websites.
Although this trolley will never run again, the trolley poles and wire of Route 23 are just a stone's throw away, and still in operating condition. The last runs along Germantown Avenue were special holiday runs for Black Friday in November 2002. A video clip has been uploaded to the Oaks Model Railroad website.

The interior, all set up for dishing it out. The Ice Cream Trolley is open 12 to 10 every day.
