Railfan Pictures of the Week - 03/23/2003
Steamtown National Historical Site Scranton PA October 1992 |
Steamtown was just turning 6 years old when these pictures were taken. The Union Pacific Big Boy was still in exile, unable to make the last mile into the park due to its heavy weight and the problems it would cause on the bridges between her resting place downtown and the park. Despite the number of engines of American railroad heritage on site, Canadian Pacific 4-6-2 #2317 was the only engine capable of excursion service, while Baldwin Locomotive Works switcher #26 (acquired two years earlier by the Steamtown Foundation from the Mad River and N.K.P. Museum in trade for the other excursion-capable locomotive in the Steamtown stable, Canadian National Railways 4-6-0 #1551) was used for the short rides inside the park. |
