Another one from Stan Feldman, a close-up of the yaw damper that is causing so much trouble on Acela and HHP-8 units, this one is on MARC 4912, labeled BBRX 4912 while enroute to Maryland for delivery. The yaw damper bracket, the triangular part of a shock absorber, black and silver in the center of the photo, that is attached to the carbody by seven bolts. The function of the yaw dampers is to prevent swaying, which can increase wear and tear to rails and train wheels. Engineers haven't pinpointed the reason why the brackets on the high-tech shock absorbers are cracking. 2/2/02 Copyright © 2002 Stan Feldman |
