At the end of the day April 1 2009, Rohm and Haas Corporation, a Philadelphia institution for almost a century, will complete the deal that will see it become part of Dow Chemical. Rohm and Haas operates a number of facilities across the nation and around the world and, as a subsidiary of Dow, its headquarters will remain on Independence Mall, right across from the Liberty Bell. From the railroad side, its two large chemical plants in Philadelphia and Bristol are still serviced by Conrail SAO (as an aside, April 1 is also Conrail's birthday). An important part of the chemical business is safety, and to this end Rohm and Haas maintained a rolling classroom in the form of its "Safety Train". The cars of the "Safety Train" made stops around the United States where they provided the opportunity for company employees and personnel from local emergency agencies to obtain hands-on training in an instructional setting. |
Occasionally the cars would show up in Lansdale, as they did on Christmas Eve 1997. They were on their way to Tank Car Corporation of America in Oreland, where routine maintenance would be performed before they were sent back out on the road. |
