Railfan Pictures of the Day - 10/17/2008
SEPTA Lansdale Station Lansdale PA October 16 2008 |
It is officially fall, as in leaves falling from the trees, with the start of SEPTA gel trains running this week, cleansing the rails along the Reading side of the system in the wee hours between 23:00 and 5:00 each morning. Normally they are back in the barn (aka Wayne Electric) before dawn, but on Wednesday morning the sun awoke to find both of them sitting on the Bethlehem Running Track in Lansdale. It seems the gel train powered by WCRR 1803 ran out of fuel on its way up the Doylestown Branch, and the other gel train with RL1A 61 was sent to rescue it. Alas, time ran out before they could get back home, so both trains were parked just before the morning rush, to wait for a shop crew to retrieve them later that morning. |
At 11:30 Extra 61 started its return trip to Wayne Electric. |
An ALCo nose to ALCo nose shot with FA 615 the rear unit of one gel train and RS18u 1803 the leader on the other. Both trains have a railwasher/gel dispenser with other equipment mounted on a flat car and a tank car supplying water for the high pressure spray. |
Rounding out what one person referred to as a "museum train" was F7 622. The FA and the F7 basically function as cab cars, the gel dispensing equipment inside them no longer used. |
