CSX Bethlehem Branch Lansdale Yard Lansdale PA May 10 2008 |
May 10 2008 was National Train Day. Where were you? |
John Almeida drove the 2 miles to Lansdale Yard to see an unusual sight for these parts. Normally the domain of ex-Conrail SD40-2's, GP38-2's and GP40-2's due to SEPTA cab signal requirements, earlier this month CSX found itself short of big iron to send up. During the first week of May, a quartet of four axles held down both C746 transfer and B738/B745 local jobs. When one of the four axles had to be shopped, a surprise visitor in the form of CSX SD60I 8728 got the call. |
As if unusual were the theme, the second unit was CSX GP38-2 2746 but facing north as well as 8728, requiring C746 to run long hood forward into town. |
In the spirit of the Spirit designations, 2746 has been dubbed "The Spirit of Ivydale", the former name for the interchange with the New Hope and Ivyland Railroad. |
On the other end was GP40-2 4423 in Dark Future and also pointing north. The next night the C746 crew would take everything except 8728 back into town. |
