SEPTA West Trenton Line Red Lion Road Huntingdon Valley PA December 13 2006 |
Service on SEPTA's R3 West Trenton Line was temporarily halted tonight when a Jeep overturned onto the tracks at the Red Lion Road grade crossing in Huntingdon Valley PA. The grade crossing is infamous for accidents during the winter weather season, but it was a light coating of rain and possibly excessive speed that apparently caused this single car accident around 6:00 PM. |
Fortunately police were on the scene quickly and flagged down Train 6382 before it got too close. Normally, if one were to come upon a scene like this, one would assume the train had something to do with it, but the engineer can justly claim "the car was like that when I got here!" Of course it was the tail end of rush hour, and a number of trains stacked up behind it. |
Huntingdon Valley police officers inspect the vehicle after it had been righted. Oil-Dry was spread around the area to soak up the fluids draining from the car. The two occupants got off much luckier than their ride, as they were able to walk away from the accident. |
The grade crossing, looking west, is on the slope of a hill and the gates are frequently taken out by skidding motorists who come over the rise too fast, especially in ice and snow. |
After the Jeep and most of the debris had been cleared, SEPTA personnel on site walked the trains through the area until a track inspector could arrive to assess the damage to the track. |
The track inspector surveys the superficial damage, and soon the line was back to normal. |
