Railfan Pictures of the Day - 11/22/2006

SEPTA Jenkintown Station Jenkintown PA November 21 2006

The day started out as any other day. During the overnight hours, the wire train was working on Track 2 just north of Jenkintown Station. The CSX Philadelphia to Lansdale transfer run C746 ran up Track 1 around 4:00, and after it cleared Glenside, the normal morning moves began. The third R1 Airport train of the morning, Train 0105, encountered wire problems on Track 1 just north of Jenkintown around 5:30. The resulting single tracking at Jenkintown of the R2 Warminster, R3 West Trenton and R5 Lansdale/Doylestown trains caused up to 45 minute delays. Fortunately the wire train was right there and by 7:00 the repairs were finished and the wire train was ready to head to Wayne Electric.
Later that morning, wire problems once again reared their ugly head in almost the same spot. At around 11:20, R5 Train 527 reported that the pantograph on the second car had been torn off and the pantograph shoe on the fifth car had been damaged. Speculation was that the train may have struck an insulator in the wires. The train came to rest just north of the home single for Jenkintown, with wire damage from there north to the Rice's Mill Road grade crossing.
Silverliner III 235's pantograph had borne the brunt of the damage.
Train 529 was sent south from Glenside to transfer 527's passengers and continue into town. Around noon, mechanical forces arrived and the wires were de-energized so that the remnants of the pantographs could be secured, after which the train was moved under its own power using the undamaged pantographs on the remaining three cars.
As for wire damage, numerous hangers littered the ground and the wires for at least five catenary poles south of Rice's Mill Road would need inspection and repair, which the wire train completed in the early morning hours in time for the Wednesday before Thanksgiving rush.
