SEPTA Main Line Wyncote PA November 13 2005 and May 26 2006 |
Rich Pattison, a frequent contributor to the Lansdale Rails Yahoogroup, has the Main Line to Lansdale and Warminster in his backyard with the West Trenton Line a stones throw away, and although dozens of Silverliners pass daily, it is the specials that get his attention. From last fall, here the gel train is returning from a trip north with BL15 51 leading on November 13 2005. |
Despite appearances, no, they do not spray corn syrup on the rails to increase traction. This train has two components: a high pressure washer to blast the leaves and their residue off the railhead, and a gel dispenser to spray a mixture called Sandite on the rails to aid adhesion. |
The washer/gel equipment is contained on the flat car at the rear. Wyncote is also the site of a major electrical substation that feeds the Landale, Warminster and West Trenton Lines. |
Recent work on the Doylestown Branch required SEPTA to send a few ballast trains up the main. Here unrebuilt SW1200 52 leads one north on May 26 2006 |
The trailing unit was BL15 51. |
