Railfan Pictures of the Day - 04/14/2006

NS Morrisville Line Fort Washington PA April 13 2006

The temporary bridge over Route 309 was put into service a few weeks ago. While initially the speed limit was 10 MPH, this was later increased to 25 MPH, not quite the 50 MPH the former track had but better than 10 MPH. Unfortunately, today it is back down to 10 MPH for the time being and this is why.

After 66Z and 20E had passed over earlier in the day without incident, 67Z crosses the new span with Horsehead SD70M 2630 leading. The lead unit is actually passing over the "other" new temporary bridge, this one over SEPTA's Main Line (the former Reading Bethlehem Branch).

The trailing unit was BNSF SD60M 9236 in BN Whiteface scheme, with a lot of NOKL gondolas loaded with steel slabs behind them.
After the last car passed, the flagman inspected the bridge ......
and immediately called the NS Mainline dispatcher to tell him to hold any further trains.
It seems the track on the west end of the bridge shifted, causing a bend in the rail.
The track was fixed and back in service this evening, but with a return of the 10 MPH restriction.
