CSX Bethlehem Branch Lansdale and Hatfield PA January 31 2006 |
With funding from a state grant obtained by Hatfield Warehouse, CSX has installed a switch which converted the stub-ended Bethlehem Industrial Track into a siding. This was done so that cars bound for Hatfield can be stored on the north end of the siding while empties continue to occupy the south end, and allow more cars to be stored closer to the warehouse, perhaps resulting in more-than-once-a-day service. The work had started back in December. A CSX boom truck occupies the Bethlehem Running Track with the MOW equipment is on the new Bethlehem Industrial Siding. |
The last remaining pieces of rail were cut to fit .... |
and lowered into position. |
Unfortunately, the last piece came up a little bit short, lucky for them there were extra pieces of rail laying around. |
Meanwhile the tie puller was busy removing about every third tie on the siding so they could be replaced. To facilitate the tie's removal without disturbing the adjacent ties, the spikes are first removed by hand, leaving only the tie plate, then clamps on the puller grip and lift the rail. |
On the opposite side, a hydraulic claw grabs the tie by the end ...... |
and pulls it out so that it can be picked up and placed out of the way by the front loader that follows behind. The tie plate usually falls by the wayside, to be picked up later. |
Waiting for their turn to work were the ballast regulator ... |
and the tamper, while in the background an interesting water tank sits in a nearby field. |
