CSX Lansdale Yard October 9 2005 |
Friday October 7 2005 CSX local B745 ran down the Doylestown Branch to pick up three freight cars. Normally that would not be anything noteworthy, except for the fact that the cars had been sitting on the Hartzels siding just north of Chalfont PA for some thirty years. The cars will be heading to their new home on the New Hope and Ivyland Railroad with hopes that they will be restored and made part of their freight train of yesteryear tourist runs. For now, they sit on the layoff track in Lansdale Yard until they are approved for the next move. |
The oldest of the cars is Union Tank Car Company UTLX 3752, a three dome tank car that celebrated its 69th birthday last month. The car was last inspected by Oreland's own Tank Car Corporation on September 9 1975 and is still wearing its original friction bearings. |
The Shippers Car Line Corporation had tank car SHPX 6622 built in August of 1940, and it was last inspected by TCCA December 12 1975 and lubed by TCCA on October 13 1981. It bears markings stating it was leased by Bear Mountain Winery in its former life. |
The last car qualifies as a tank car even though its tank had long since rotted away. The original tank was made of wood and was used to transport vinegar. SBIX 1606 was built for Standard Brands in February 1948. The car outlived its reporting mark SBIX by over 25 years. A picture of a model of the car can be found here. |
