SEPTA/CSX/NS Stony Creek Branch North Wales and Norristown PA April 20 2005

A derailment in March 2005 that put part of the wye in Lansdale PA out of service has forced CSX to take cars it needs to turn down the Stony Creek Branch to Norristown and back, a more than twenty mile round trip and, because it is excepted track, a three hour chore.

Due to its serpentine layout, the Stony Creek Branch crosses North Wales Road three times, two at grade. B738 approaches the east crossing, which passes under North Wales Road just east of Morris Road. Even though SEPTA owns the branch, it does not use nor maintain it. CSX is responsible for the branch from Route 73 Skippack Pike east to the junction with the SEPTA Lansdale-Doylestown Branch south of Broad Street in Lansdale PA. This portion of the branch is pretty much as it was when it was reactivated over a decade ago.

B738 approaches the west crossing of North Wales Road, which was recently cleared of trees along the right of way. NS is responsible for the branch from Route 73 Skippack Pike west to the junction with the SEPTA Norristown Branch at Elm Street in Norristown PA.
B738 approaches Germantown Pike amid more evidence of NS's vendetta on vegetation.
B738 had to wait at Elm Street for an arriving SEPTA local to clear before heading west.
