Railfan Pictures of the Day - 03/17/2005
CSX Lansdale Yard Lansdale PA March 13 2005 |
CSX B745 had a low speed derailment on Friday night. As the train was traversing the Doylestown Freight Track, either the east rail rolled or the west rail broke, putting two box cars and one wheel of trailing engine CSX 4448 on the ground. CSX, SEPTA and Terra came up Sunday morning to rectify the situation. Part One is here. Before work started, SEPTA snuck one inbound local past the scene. |
Clearances would not be a problem, but the track would have to be taken out of service for the rest of the day. Also, while the heavy equipment was working, the overhead wire was de-energized periodically, which is what the orange wire and pole in the previous picture are for. |
Terra bought one sidewinder for the job. |
They tried pulling the cars out with 4448, then added 6148, and then 6148 alone, with little success. |
Using the sidewinder to pull the truck of boxcar AOK 1505 while 6148 pulled boxcar UP 371526, they attempted to move the cars together, but still no luck. |
SEPTA continued running trains on the Doylestown Branch during the operation. |
It was decided that what was needed was MORE POWER! So they swapped out GP40-2 6148 for SD40-2 8868 and gave it another try. After that did not work out, it was decided to tackle the cars one at a time and pull them from different directions. |
