Remarks:     During their long and successful career the 'F' class engines served on almost every section of the New Zealand railways. Despite being a light engine they "climbed like a cat" and would "walk away" with enormous loads. On level track, even an 800 ton load was not beyond their capabilities. During their life they underwent many minor variations, among them the grate area was increased to 10.5 sq ft. Boiler pressure varied over the years and when their life with the NZR had expired, the boilers went on to power bush locomotives and log haulers. The 'F' was originally introduced in 1872 and the last survivor with the NZR was not withdrawn from service until 1964.
