Starting in 2011, Oxford Diecast Ltd. of Great Britain (which has had a manufacturing plant in China since 2000) added 1:148 scale static tram models to its extensive product line of metal diecast vehicles. The company selected to model the Dick, Kerr and Co. four-wheel tram, which had been ubiquitous in Great Britain into the postwar 1950s, when most transport systems either replaced them with motorbuses or shut down operations. The version selected was double-deck, with fully enclosed end platforms and upper deck, as well as the classic spiral stairways.
While having the visibly thick walls and window posts common to diecast models, these inexpensive models are well finished and attractive, and not just to diecast collectors. Some modelers have successfully powered them with various N-gauge power chassis, chiefly from Japan, to make them operational. Finding a chassis that is narrow enough, has the right wheelbase and appearance, and has good operating characteristics is just part of the challenge.
