Beginning in 1996, Kato Co. Ltd. of Japan produced N-gauge models based on the Düwag type T2 2-axle strassenbahn or tram, a design used on many German systems. The models feature an unwired sprung metal pantograph. Most of the models offered were produced for Wolfgang Lemke GmbH, a European distributor of model trains, and most of these consisted of a coupled motor car / trailer car (Triebwagen / Beiwagen) pair.
The product numbering system is inconsistent. Some of these models were sold with a "K" prefix on their product numbers, while others lacked this prefix. The models are listed below in order by product number, with a "K" prefix or not according to the markings on the plastic "jewel box" packaging. A number of models shared packaging printed with product number 14610 and a generic "Straßenbahn" description. There are a few models with a red "safety bar" arrangement under one or both ends of the tram, instead of an underfloor lug onto which a coupling bar clips. Where these also had a coupling bar for a trailer, it is a special version that snaps onto the safety bar instead of the lug. Arbeitswagen 14617 has frosted side windows.
Kato produced a model in 1997 painted to represent a popular Düwag T2 tram given to Hiroshima, Japan by Hannover, Germany under a "sister city" arrangement. This model was sold in the domestic Japanese market as product 14070. In 2020 Kato produced a new power chassis and used it in an updated version of this model (product 14070-01). This newer chassis has a number of improvements, including a coreless motor and axles that are not rigidly fixed and can "rock" to maintain rail contact. - R. D. Kerr
