-Martinez once had wigwags at all three grade crossings on the SP main. 2 of the 3 lasted until the late 1990's. This was the third that was  replaced during the 1950's. Also note the human flagman assisting the magnetic one. I would assume his job was lost when they installed the gates a couple years later.

The pair of upper quadrant signals is at Richmond Road in Susanville.  I am facing southeast.  This crossing is just west of the depot.  The signals lasted several years longer until the SP cut back the branch by a mile or so.  The locomotive is from the Susanville Local from Wendel.  It comes this far west just to access the runaround track.

Taken at the Highway 36 crossing of the Western Pacific Highline, just north of Westwood.  This highway runs between Red Bluff and Susanville, and in the picture, we are facing east.  Technically, the track belongs to the SP and this is an SP crossing.  It is the very end of SP's Westwood Branch, but the part beyond Susanville had been abandoned, so the SP couldn't even access it.  WP eventually bought the 6 or 8 miles it uses.  The wig wags were gone a year or two later and now the track is busier than ever as the BNSF Inside Gateway.

Same as above, different angle.

Note very short cantilever. This may have been a one of a kind installation.

Dave Clark sends in these interesting photos from the archives of the MN/DOT. Apparently a  photographer was sent out to record the current grade crossing signals before the crossing was upgraded. These photos date back to January 1963. There were two crossings, side by side and linked to an overlapping circuit.

34th street crossing Amarillo, Texas July 10, 1955. Train is Eastern Express-- Lubbock, TX connection with the eastbound San Francisco Chief. This wigwag (and its partner on the other side of the tracks) guarded the busy mainline crossing until the state built an overpass
over the tracks in the late 1970s.
