EMD H-15 Locomotives /
H-15
These rebuilt SD35 and SDP35 units came from the Seaboard System, where they were numbered 1-8. As CSX 1001-1008, they spent their time on CSX working in ex Seaboard System major yards such as in Waycross, GA and Hamlet, NC.
EMD SD20-2 Locomotives /
SD20-2
These were Chessie's versions of reworked SD35s, and were all ex-B&O SD35s. All 5 of these units were rebuilt for service in Cincinnati's Queensgate yard.
EMD SD35 Locomotives /
SD35
Often found in yard service around the system, CSX rostered 75 SD35s. The Seaboard System contributed most of the units from both SCL and L&N heritage, but each of the 3 Chessie roads contributed some as well.
EMD SD35M Locomotives /
SD35M
Only two of these units were on the CSX roster (2420-2421), and both were former L&N SD35s. They worked in Osbourne Yard in Louisville, KY, at least during their time on CSX.
EMD SD38 Locomotives /
SD38
The conrail split brought a handful of new models to the CSX roster, the SD38 being one of them. CSX did have SD38-2 units, so these ex-Conrails were numbered immediately above them on the roster.
EMD SD38-2 Locomotives /
Title or Info
All former L&N units, SD38-2s 2450-2454 were almost always found working Boyle's yard near Birmingham, AL. 2450-2453 have each worn two different CSX paint schemes, while 2454 has worn three different CSX schemes.
EMD SD40 Locomotives /
SD40
CSX inherited SD40s from both the Chessie side (B&O, C&O, WM), and the Seaboard side (L&N, CRR, GM). CSX had a major SD40 rebuild program upgrading the completed units to SD40-2s. Units that didn't get rebuilt were eventually renumbered into the 4600 series.
EMD SD40-2 Locomotives /
SD40-2
All but 20 of the SD40-2s in their original 8000-8261 CSX numbers were ex-Seaboard. Some units were renumbered into the 2400 series and used as yard units. Ex-Conrail units were added in the 8800 series.
EMD SD40-3 Locomotives /
SD40-3
The Huntington shops rebuilt SD40-2's from the frames up, attached a new cab style purchased from an outside vendor, and outshopped the CSX SD40-3. Interestingly CSX opted for white on black numberboards on these units.
EMD SD45 Locomotives /
SD45
CSX had 45 SD45s on the roster, all from the Seaboard side of CSX. SCL contributed the majority, but there were some ex-Clinchfield units as well.
EMD SD45-2 Locomotives /
SD45-2
Originally numbered 8950-8982, all of these units were former Seaboard System units (SCL, CRR). The 8969 became the Huntington Shops Load Test unit (HLS1). After the conrail split, CSX picked up 3 more units and re-used numbers 8973,8974, and 8976.
EMD SD50 Locomotives /
SD50
An early sign that CSX was about to become a reality was that new Chessie and Seaboard SD50s were delivered in the same number series. Included on this page are SD50-2 and SD50-3 rebuilds that kept their same numbers.
EMD SD50-2 Locomotives /
SD50-2
While most CSX SD50s were upgraded to SD50-2s, only ex-Conrail units (acquired from the Conrail split) were renumbered into the 2400s. These were assigned to MofW service.
EMD SD60 Locomotives /
SD60
The first EMD units to be purchased new for CSX, they were delivered in the CSX stealth CSX-g scheme. Conrail units were added from the conrail split, along with some EMD units acquired from a power swap with EMD/LLPX.
EMD SD60I Locomotives /
SD60I
CSX acquired all of these units in the Conrail split with NS. CSX received 34 units, and all of them have been repainted into CSX colors.
EMD SD60M Locomotives /
SD60M
CSX acquired all of these units in the Conrail split with NS. CSX received 31 units, and all of them have been repainted into CSX colors.
EMD SD70AC Locomotives /
Title or Info
Purchased new by CSX, the SD70AC units were first numbered 700-789 (775-789 are ex-Conrail). Those units were renumbered 4500-4589, with new units after that following as 4701-4830. SD70ACe 4831-4850 are included here.
EMD SD70M Locomotives /
SD70M
CSX picked up 25 SD70M units in a power swap with EMD/LLPX. All 25 came wearing versions of EMDs burgandy paint. CSX traded many GP15-1, GP38 and SW1500 units in return for the 25 SD70Ms, along with 3 SD70s and 3 GP60s.
EMD SD80AC Locomotives /
SD80AC
A model unique to Conrail, these huge units were picked up by CSX in the Conrail split with NS. Originally numbered CSX 800-812, they were renumbered 4590-4612. CSX 801/4591 was the only unit to be painted CSX-bc, but all 13 have received CSX-yn3 paint.
