as part of the
California Rail 2020 Conference 2004 at
the Canterbury Hotel,
S.F., held by the
Train Riders Association of California <trac@omsoft.com>
TRAC had been keeping its
members updated about the second day of the conference with information
like this:
We will be touring the southwest part
of the MUNI system, the J, K, L and M lines for about four hours,
aboard two historic street cars, #130 and #1811 (Milan). Docents
will meet riders at the Balboa Street BART/Lilght Rail station across
from the car barn between 10:30 and 11:00 am.
We took BART, below the Market Street at Powell Street
intersection, toward the Colma/Airport/Milbrae Station, exiting at the
Balboa Street location. Others took the Muni J Line from the same
location.

All the facts about #130 are at:

Milan’s Peter Witt Trams (including
#1811 used today) and all other streetcars are inventoried at:
http://www.streetcar.org/fline/streetcars/index.html
thanks to the Market Street Railway, www.streetcar.org
.
This older type of streetcar was
designed by Cleveland transit leader
Peter Witt and ran in many US cities, though never in San Francisco.
Milan, Italy built hundreds of Peter Witts in 1928 and are still
running some today. Muni got one as a Trolley Festival gift in 1984 and
liked it so much they obtained more in 1998 to meet the huge F-line
rider demand. Still wearing Milan orange, some of these popular cars
may be repainted in earlier Milan yellow or green liveries, or to honor
other cities that ran this classic trolley.
We stopped from 12:15 to 12:40 at the end of the line at the beach.
1811 traveled with 130 throughout the day.

Heading back to the barn, we had ample

Then we were off down the hill to the barn.
|
We pulled into a stop, waiting for our
chance to head on in. Great time for final
shots of our cars and some PCC historic cars.
|
No. 130 continued down Market
Street. Riders were given an opportunity to move to the 1811 car
for another hour of riding. We moved and rode on down to Powell
and Market on #1811. We walked up Powell, stopping at Lori's
Diner, with its 1959 Edsel in the dining area, at Powell and Sutter for
supper. When we got back to the room at the Canterbury, I edited
photos and we watched "Something's Got to Give." The Canterbury
provides free in-room wifi Internet access! And, it works
fine. We decided to arise at 5 a.m. We were at the Amtrak
Bus stop at 835 Market in plenty of time for our 7:10 a.m.
pickup. The clerk suggested we take Mason to Market from our
hotel for a 'safer' walk.
"I left my heart in San Francisco..." on the historic trolleys!
