Oakland Maintenance Facility Tour

Constructed in 2004 through a partnership between Amtrak and the State of California, the Oakland Maintenance Facility (OMF) is a 52,439-square-foot maintenance shop which includes a service and inspection area, fueling station, train washer facility, office space, and two parking lots. The $53 million facility provides preventive maintenance for 28 locomotives and 106 rail cars used on two Northern California State routes (Capitol Corridor and San Joaquin); daily turn around servicing for the Capitol Corridor and San Joaquin trainsets; and daily servicing for the Amtrak long distance California Zephyr (11 cars and two locomotives). An average of 2.5 million gallons of diesel fuel per year is consumed. The OMF is maintained by approximately 140 employees and is in operation 24 hours per day, 365 days per year.

Keynote

IMG_7346.jpg
The Honorable Brian Annis, Secretary, California State Transportation Agency
Current population of California 40 million and we will have another 10 million by 2050.  California government is bullish on rail.  Emphasis is on more options to get to the rail station including scooters that he and son used in San Diego recently.  Governor Newsome wants a goal of reduced greenhouse gases.  CalTrain electrification is ongoing.

CEO Roundtable

Moderator: Don Sepulveda, Associate Vice President, Wilson & Co.

IMG_7355.jpg
Jim Hartnett, Executive Director, Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board

IMG_7351.jpg
Stephanie Wiggins, Chief Executive Officer, Metrolink
The Metrolink system covers 6 counties with a 500-mile network.  She thanked those involved for the success of the "No on 6" campaign.  SB1 is now critical.  Metrolink's Goals:  Double Ridership in 5 years.  Head to zero emissions.  Be ready for the Olympics.  Stephanie mentioned "Silver Tsunami", the first time I had heard the term, meaning the aging of America's workforce.  As it relates to Metrolink, retiring employees agreeing to mentor young employees.  Another of Stephanie's quotes was, "You can go fast alone, but far together."

IMG_7361.jpg
Farhad Mansourian, General Manager, Sonoma Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART)
To get youth interested in riding trains, SMART offers 18 and younger persons free rides for 5 months with an adult rider.

The challenge to all three speakers is the cost of living for their employees.

Critique of ESports Arena by Press Representatives by author

For better visibility of the power point presentation - do not seat panel members in front of the screens. example
Light the whole panel, not just the ones in the middle. example
Light the main speaker at the podium from both sides, not just one spot on the left side of their head. example
Monitor sound of main speakers and adjust for soft-spoken individuals such as the CEO of Siemens.

Critique of presentations from audience viewpoint by author
Use print size that can be read by all your audience.  Good example and Type size too small
