None of the 4 elevators worked on this December 7 at 7 pm, before the
ARTIC was to be the Anaheim Station the next morning. Hope they
got them fixed by morning for the riders with limited mobility.
They were working on 3 elevators and were surprised when I tired to use
the fourth and found that it did not work either. Therefore the

The hok.com website had valuable information on their
building of ARTIC.
Sample of the out side of the roof panels.
The in side view of the panels.
At first glance, the
clear material that will largely encase the Anaheim Regional
Transportation Intermodal Center appears to be glass.
Instead, plastic pillows will line the roof of the transportation hub,
providing ample sunlight for passengers waiting for trains, buses and
taxis.
The durable material – ethylene tetrafluoroethylene, or ETFE – weighs
less than glass and resists corrosion. It is relatively easy for
janitors to maintain, said Natalie Meeks, head of Anaheim's Public
Works Department.
The fluorocarbon-based polymer isn't widely used in the United States.
It was most famously used as part of the exterior of the Beijing Water
Cube, which served as the swimming venue during the 2008 Summer
Olympics.
“It's pretty spectacular,” Meeks said.
ARTIC's roof will have 200,000 square feet of ETFE panels – enough to
cover four football fields.
The diamond-shaped, opaque panels are capable of deflecting the sun's
rays while providing enough insulation to keep air conditioning costs
down, said architect Ernest Cirangle, who served as design principal
for ARTIC.
“The material has a wonderful quality that changes with the light
during different times of the day,” Cirangle said. “I think people will
be impressed.”
Later in this report you will see a
photo of the air pressure hose going to each pillow through which air
is pumped (no special gas inside the polymer pillows that make up the
room.
hok.com's model was the best one at the ribbon cutting - large and with
no roof so you could see down inside.
At 2 pm, ribbon cutting festivities began.
The 800 chairs were filled with SRO around the edges.
The speakers and guests of the City of Anaheim took their places as
well.
Natalie Meeks, Public Works Director, City of Anaheim, opened the
ceremonies.
Nathan Zug, Anaheim Fire and Rescue Chaplain gave the Invocation.
Lou Correra, Former California State Senator, led us in the flag salute.
Tom Tait, Mayor of the City of Anaheim
Loretta Sanchez, U.S. Congresswoman, 46th District
Dan Richard, Chairman, California High Speed Rail Authority Board of
Directors.
"ARTIC is the first station of the California High Speed Rail"
Darrell Johnson, CEO, Orange County Transportation Authority
"This station was built on time and on budget."

Parking is free "until 2016". Map of all 3 parking lots, click here.
Bike riders use the trains to and
from ARTIC. They prefer using Metrolink over Amtrak Pacific
because of Amtrak's restrictions. They mention that Metrolink not
only has a bike car, but each car holds at least one bicycle. I
observed the loading of a 4:06 pm southbound Metrolink at ARTIC and
several bikes were loaded on this first day the trains stopped at ARTIC
rather than at the Stadium Station.
The Santa Ana River Bike Trail, west side of the river, now has a
cutoff so riders can enter here and store their bike if they like, or
take it on the train.
I looked into one of the unlocked bike
lockers and noticed that one bike can be put in from the west side, and
another can be put in from the east side, thus two bikes can be stored
in what looks like one locker because they are split diagonally down
the middle. But there is a catch. The next photo shows the
difficulty one would have putting a bike in on the east side:
View from the entrance to ARTIC property and bike lockers.
View from the bike lockers to the train platforms.
If you ride a bike to ARTIC on the bike
trail, and continue to take your bike on the train, you have three
options. For a northbound train, you have these 2 options:
One, the metal staircase you see above, which is labeled "Emergency Use
Only", but was open December 8. The second option is the ramp you
see on the lower corner on the far right of the photo labeled,
"Authorized Personnel Only" but is being used by passengers as the
quickest way to ARTIC building on December 8. For a southbound
train you have one option, to ride through a tunnel under those metal
stairs also labeled, "Authorized Personnel Only." As far as I can
tell after spending time at ARTIC parts of 3 days, the only "Authorized
Personnel" to use that tunnel or the far ramp is the Amtrak luggage
cart. Did the architect of ARTIC really expect bike riders to
ride into the lower level of ARTIC, board an elevator up to the
Concourse, walk the Concourse to the platform elevators, board the
correct elevator with their bike and ride down to the platform?

Perhaps this is where the California High Speed Rail will arrive at
ARTIC.

Inside ARTIC were more displays
Bodie Rasmussen, owner of the Lost Bean offered fresh brewed organic coffee and tea to all.
See a Video of Bodie at his Facebook Page: http://www.thelostbean.com/ His Kiosk will be just inside the front doors, on the right. At his store in Tustin there is a wine bar called Lost Vine.
On second floor, vendors were again presenting their specialties and Paul Cunningham was photographing them.
Nephew Paul and I enjoyed several Virginia oysters.
Paul took classic black and white photos of the full-bearded barber who will have a space on second floor soon.
There were other industry displays by companies involved with ARTIC's construction
I was curious about what filled the polymer pillows that made up
the room and learned that it is simply air pressure through a hose in
each pillow. Polymer pillows in the roof in the photo below.
Thus ends my ARTIC report after visiting on four different days - First
Day of Operation on December 6, Night photographs December 7, VIP
Ribbon Cutting on December 8, and this Grand Opening December 13,
2014.
