I saw some rail activity in Plover, Wisconsin, during April 2023 Here's a local locomotive, I think this is for some training school for new employees, on a rainy Thursday |
and a quarter mile west, on the wye, is a Herzog train |
.
with a backhoe, lifting rail up and over the side and laying it on the ground. |
The Herzog got west of the Plover wye |
.
and unloaded some more rail. I don't know how much is for spares, or if it will be installed here, too. |
.
Rail has been delivered for 2 miles north of town.
Notice the mile posts.
Plover still shows the original mile 82 as counted from Green Bay.
After the GBW was severed and removed east of Plover,
the mile posts were 'moved' north of town.
81 is a mile north of the wye,
82 is near Tommy's Turnpike,
83 is north of the Plover River,
and 84 might be near the junction and end of the P-line on the south side of Point.
and tie plates to match the heavier rail. Facebook messages report that the rails and plates came from Rocky Run siding a few miles north of here, which was recently upgraded. This work replaces some 1925, 39-foot rail in Plover; using 1980's used rail, now welded |
.
There was a variety of equipment, this is a Strategic Rail truck. |
.
and the next day is sunny. Here comes the crew around the curve south of Tommy's Turnpike. |
.
A Speed King Pettibone leads the way, lifting the new rail up and laying it between the old rails. I didn't spend all day watching the work. I think they unspike and roll out one rail at a time, while the wheels on the other side stay 'in gauge' to keep everything lined up over the existing spike holes. And after one side has new rail in place, then the other side can be rolled out. |
.
another contractor.
and CN equipment was there, too.
.
the tail end of the procession of equipment |
.
At a street crossing, there's a pre-welded adapter rail, 90 lb on one end, and 115 on the other |
