Mesabi Miner Open House 1977

Mesabi Miner Open House 1977

I like watching the Port Huron ship watching camera, and on a hot summer day I decided to stay in the cool basement and pull out my 35mm slides from 1977.

I had seen the daily newspaper Ashland Daily News (yes, paper, this was before the Internet) and there was an article about an Open House in Duluth for showing the new Missabi Miner. Back then, I was working in Park Falls and my work week ended at noon Saturday. Then I drove the 2 hours to see this new ship.

I took 35mm slides of some literature and then at the public tour.

While I am writing this in 2021, I am watching the Miner going past the Port Huron ship watching camera, and seeing if there's any differences after all these years.

Today in 2021 I see the Mesabi Miner name is on this deck hatch crane, not the manufacturer name of 1977.
