May, 2019. The leaves are just coming onto the trees. This is kite aerial photography. The CN 6100 is being refueled by a traveling truck. This is near Thiel Clay on the northwest corner of Wisconsin Rapids. |
looking further east, the diamond comes in to view. The city compost piles are on the right. |
It's been ? 3 ? years since my last aerial survey here. I thought the yard was 8 tracks, with the 2 on the left / east reserved for the UP and their trackage rights. But I count 10 tracks now, and the there's a main on the right. All that might be explained by the new work on the yard leads and tracks a year ago. The Rapids paper mill can eat up 30 cars twice a day. The Nekoosa mill and ERCO can get another 20. And twice a week, the Necedah corn alcohol plant can fill 15 tank cars. Sand hoppers might be in the yard temporarily, but they usually just pass through on the track over the diamond. |
Railroad yard, paper mill, trees. There's 18,000 people in the city, but I can hardly see the buildings from here. Welcome to Wisconsin Rapids. |
