The Willard
Munger State Trail is the former Northern Pacific (NP) route from
Hinkley, MN, to Duluth, MM. With 70 miles of paved surface, MN
DNR claims it to be the longest paved trail in the world. It was
abandoned by Burlington Northern in favor of the former Great Northern
route in the 1970's.
We will be biking the northern 15 mile section from Carlton to Duluth;
which is by far the most scenic. Unless otherwise noted, all photos are
from 9/24/06.

We cross the St. Louis River after 2 miles and view the Thomson
Canyon.

Another view of Thomson Canyon.

Heading out from Carlton on a beautiful Fall day.

Most of the trail is heavily forested.

The trail passes between rock retaining walls with abundant ferns.
