June/July 2003 K4 Update
During late June/early July 2003, Scott Cessna, Director of Operations, Railroaders Heritage Corporation/Altoona Railroaders Memorial Museum visited Steamtown. He had this to say regarding the current status of the K-4: "While replacing the rear section of new mud ring that had to be redone, an examination of the mud ring along both sides was conducted. It was found to be very pitted and we decided it should be replaced in it's entirety. The "windows" cut in the firebox to examine the mud ring also allowed us to view the rigid stay bolts and most of them were seen to be to corroded to be left in place. Much of the plate steel was found to be too thin to be kept as well. As a result, approximately 4 feet was sectioned out of the fireman's side of the firebox and wrapper sheet. This will accommodate the installation of a new mud ring and new plate steel as well as all new rigid stay bolts. The locomotive was braced and this first section has already been removed. Upon completion of the fireman's side, the same process will be done on the engineer's side. The pictures show the bracing and the backhead bolted temporarily in place in order to align the new sections of mud ring."
