Through its subsidiary Rail Link, Inc., headquartered in Jacksonville, FL, Genesee & Wyoming Inc. also provides industrial switching and related customer logistics services. Rail Link serves twenty-three industrial customers in nine states and currently operates six short line railroads, four of which serve major U.S. ports.
In recent years, Rail Link has carved a niche for its contract services in two key areas, port authorities and electric utilities/coal mines, offering a total logistics package of services which include rail switching, locomotive maintenance, track maintenance and unit train coordination combined with loading and unloading services.
Rail Link is currently the only contractor to have developed a service product accepted by both Class I railroads (Union Pacific and Burlington Northern-Santa Fe) in Wyoming's Powder River Basin. In 2000, Rail Link employees loaded more than 7,418 unit trains, which equates to a staggering 102.3 million tons of PRB coal.
