Gillette, mile post 597.2 on the Black Hills Sub, the Campbell County seat and the largest incorporated city in Campbell County, was founded in 1891 by Edward Gillette. Gillette lies on a high plateau between the Black Hills and the Bighorn Mountains. The town’s livestock industry dates from the early 1800’s.
The Powder River Basin surrounding Gillette is America’s energy heartland, producing more coal than most states and more than many countries combined. Wyoming mines lead the nation in preserving the environment and wildlife. Mule deer, pronghorn antelopes and buffalo graze on unspoiled land closeby. Oil and gas production are also key factors in the economy.
