19th Annual WNYRHS Winter 2010
Train & Toy Show QUILT RAFFLE

And the WINNER Is.........

The winning ticket for the WNYRHS Quilt Raffle was drawn at the end of the 19th Annual WNYRHS Train and Toy Show and the lucky winner is: Ticket #1553 Maryann Zagorski!

Maryann Zagorski
Maryann Zagorski was eagerly awaiting my call; as news about the drawing had already reached her thru her son-in-law Al Olmstead. A former Cheektowaga resident, Maryann now resides in Leesville, SC, but keeps a close watch on Western New York after moving south several years ago. She purchased a single ticket for the Quilt Raffle and was really surprised to hear the news that she had won! Maryann wanted Mrs. Wilke to know how much she will appreciate this Quilt and to thank her for her making it available for the Raffle. Maryann told me that this is the first time she has ever won a raffle! The Quilt will find its way down to her at Easter Time when her daughter comes down to visit. With the cold weather in the Carolinas, this Quilt will help warm things up a bit!

Nearly $1000.00 in tickets were sold, we would like to thank everyone for their support. A special thanks goes to Maureen Wilke for her extreme generosity. Proceeds from the raffle will be put towards the restoration work on the Williamsville Depot.

The story behind the “Railroad Crossing” Quilt Raffle begins with Maureen Wilke and the reason she spent over 180 hours handcrafting this beautiful and cozy quilt.

Always interested in Historic Preservation, Maureen joined the friends of the Buffalo Theater in 1976 and volunteered to help with the theater’s restoration. Two years were spent working, along with others, to restore the magnificent Mighty Wurlitzer” pipe organ at Shea’s Theater.

Her volunteerism led to employment at Shea’s as a box-office ticket seller. She retired in the summer of 2000 and found time to pursue her hobby of sewing and needlework. When her church started a Quilting group in 2004, they made quilts out of donated fabrics and donated their finished work to City Mission and Cornerstone Manor.

The idea for this train quilt came from a fabric catalog that featured an “All Aboard” medley of 6 train themed fabrics. She began the Quilt in December 2007 and completed it in February of 2009. In August 2009, she entered the Quilt for judging at the Erie County Fair and won a Red Ribbon in the Original Design Category. While at the fair; she picked up a Train Show flyer, contacted us at the Williamsville Depot and offered the 72 ½” x 88 ½” Quilt and two 16” square pillows to the Society as a fundraiser for our Preservation Projects, we of course accepted.
