Bend Millwork Co., of Bend, OR, leased a fleet of these
double door box cars from U.S. Leasing starting about 1974. I don't
know how many cars they leased, nor when they were returned. I moved to
Bend in 1994, the mill is still there, but no longer ships or receives
by rail.

At Coast Engine & Equipment Co., Tacoma, WA
Smurfit Newsprint's plant in Newburg, OR, is switched by this ex-Rock Island SW9. Rock Island 777 was acquired by locomotive dealer Chrome Crankshaft after the Rock Island shut down in 1980. It was acquired 6/81 for use at the Newburg plant by Publishers Paper, then owner of the plant. In 1992 I photographed the unit, by then lettered for Smurfit Newsprint, at Coast Engine & Equipment Co. in Tacoma, WA., it's prime mover apparently being rebuilt judging by the empty space behind the open hood doors. |

Baldwin DS-4-4-750 #101
Klamath Falls, OR
Weyerhaeuser operated four Baldwin switchers on their "Woods Line" that headed north out of Sycan, OR. DS-4-4-750's 101 and 102 were formerly Baldwin demonstrators 750 and 751, built in May 1950 and apparently acquired the same year. Two similar Baldwin S-8's were built in May 1951 as Weyerhaeuser 103 and 105 (Number 104 was "skipped" since that number was still carried by a steam locomotive). The four Baldwins were retired about 1984, replaced by ex-Burlington Northern GP9's. The 101 was acquired by Fred & Lucy Kepner of the infamous "Great Western Railroad Museum". The OC&E/Weyerhaeuer roster in the June 1990 issue of CTC Board indicates that it was "sold to Northwest Railway Equipment, 1990". You can see a small "NRE 750" stenciled on the side of the hood near the nose. Apparently both NRE and the Great Western Museum are owned by the Kepners. The 101 is parked along a short stretch of the old OC&E in Klamath Falls, behind the "Bi-Mart" store at SE 6th Street and Washburn Way. Unfortunately, the 102, 103, and 105 were scrapped by Sessler Metals in Klamath Falls. |
