WNG History

The Weekend ‘N’ gineers originally formed in 1994 consists of N-Scale modular railroad and operating equipment. Founded on the basis of N-Trak standards and modified to meet club needs the members acquired a seasonal layout home in the Independence Center, Independence Mo. The growing popularity of model railroading in the area attracted many new members. Reaching recognition within the membership of N-Track, the Weekend 'N'gineers began showing in local Great American Train Shows (GATS) from year to year.

In June of 2003 the Weekend ‘N’ gineers moved from the clubhouse on the west side of the mall to a new location on the east side of the mall. A larger area was provided by the mall staff near the former Jones Store. The 12,000 sq. ft. facility has been dubbed Train Town and now houses four train clubs. Many improvements were needed to make the facility a destination within the mall community. The new facade' lends its appearance to a Depot entrance with cargo and passenger entry ways. The G scale KC Garden Railroad Society is filling the other half of the facade' with a semi-permanent layout.

In October of 2004 the Weekend ‘N’ gineers moved from the Blue Ridge Mall into Union Station.
There are trains on three different levels. The large layout currently is not on public display, however this is only temporary.

July 15th, 2005 we sold out the Greater Kansas City Model Railroad Expo (GKCMRRE) show scheduled for 24th & 25th of Sept.

In February of 2008, we moved into shared space with The Eastern Jackson County Mainliners in Odessa after being asked to leave Union Station.

In July of 2009, talks began between The Weekend ‘N’ gineers, The Southern Kansas City Model Railroad Historical Society, The Kansas City Lionel Club and a new member, The Mid America Society for Railroad Preservation and Education, for the reunification of Train Town.

In November of 2010 Train Town moved into its current location at Ward Parkway Center in Kansas City Missouri. We are located inside of the mall adjacent to Target. Our hours of operation are from Noon to 5:00 on Saturday and Sunday. Please note that we are closed on the major holidays that the mall is closed.
