Working up from the frame, the
boiler would be the next major sub assembly. The basis of the taper
course and the smokebox came from a Bachmann 2-8-0 that was scrapped to
build WCNG No8. The main course of the boiler is a piece of 2.5"
PVC drain pipe. The end of the PVC was blocked off with a circle
of .040 styrene and the Connie boiler section attached to it. Figure
7 At this point, the sub walls for the firebox was built and
applied to the main course. Once again a styrene overlay was applied
to this and firebox barcing was fabricated to keep the boiler level on
the frame. Figure 8
Boiler tapers are
always a challenge to do, this time I decided to try a different approach.
I cut a series of wedges from styrene, and applied them like vanes to the
taper course of the boiler Figure 9. Using a pice
of paper wrapped around the taper, I traced out a pattern to use in cutting
out a .010 styrene wrapper. Once it was fitted in place I trimmed
it to fit with an Xacto Knife Figure 10
The smokebox was sanded smooth and a wrapper of .010 styrene applied, to give it a surface for the rivets to be applied. |
