On 8-21-02, Amtrak’s Coast Starlight, #14, hit a drawbar left lying between the rails in Hayward, California, on UP’s Coast Subdivision. Consist includes:

Trailing truck of 113 on ground + main air reservoir leak damage, baggage car on ground, transition car on ground, lead truck of head sleeper on ground, and one axle on each of two coaches at rear of train on ground. All three locos sustained varying degrees of gearbox damage. Based on the additional damage to transition and sleeper, and damage to track at point of impact, a rather substantial object was struck.
