Steam Locomotion in the 21st Century The Recent History of Steam Locomotive Development |
updated 7 February 2022
#2644 was the first locomotive modified by
David Wardale in South Africa, under the guise of reducing
lineside fires. The locomotive was fitted with a dual Lempor
exhaust system, the Gas Producer Combustion System, and
other minor improvements. While Wardale christened the
locomotive "Irene" after his wife, crews called her "Spooky"
because of her quiet exhaust. While this locomotive survived into preservation, sadly, in 2014, scrap thieves severely damaged the locomotive when the torch cut the locomotive's frame so they could steal the bronze bearings from the driving axles.
