COAL CREEK. The Coal Creek Branch is
a pioneer line (running down the side passage of the house) which leads
to the timber mill and gravel quarry at Coal Creek. Coal Creek station
consists of a passing loop and a terminus road. The area is dominated
by a large water tank at the terminus end and a long viaduct at the
entrance to the loop. On the Coal Creek Branch itself is a most famous
piece of civil engineering, “Von Ryan’s Tunnel”. For
many years the progress in completing this line was halted by the in
ability of the constructing engineers to negotiate a path through the
Orchid Range. (a substantial row of Orchid pots down the side passage).
With the help of the firm of consulting engineers, Brett Ryan &
Associates, a way was found to go under this natural obstacle and to
forge the line through to Coal Creek.
