Photo - 1959 Tube Stock at Golders Green
1959 Tube Stock at Golders Green
Depot, Northern Line. This photo (by Brian Hardy) shows a train in newly overhauled
condition in the 1980s. Line stickers have not yet been provided and the train is in
much the same condition as when delivered. The only notable change is the red
stabling light (next to the twin headlamps) which was added in the early 1970s when oil
tail lamps were withdrawn. Some further changes were made in the 1990s following
safety modifications and line identity schemes.
This stock was built for the Piccadilly Line and worked at various
times on that line and the Central, Bakerloo and Northern. There was also a similar
but not identical stock known as the 1962 Tube Stock which spent most of its life on the
Central Line until replaced by the 1992 Tube Stock. Some of the replaced 1962 Stock
units were used on the Northern Line to supplement the 1959 Stock fleet.
The 1959 Tube Stock is now withdrawn, the last train of this type
running in January 2000. It was the last LU passenger stock to have a two-person
crew.
