The 1998 Convention of the National Railway Historical Society was held in
Syracuse, New York, from July 6-12, 1998.
The first trip of the Convention on July 6th featured the host Central New York Chapter's "Lackawanna" E8s running from Syracuse to Scranton, Pennsylvania. The duo lead the southbound trip under a signal bridge just outside Scranton on the St. Lawrence & Hudson's (Canadian Pacific's) ex-Delaware & Hudson/originally Lackawanna route.

Steamtown National Historic Site hosted a night photo session on July 6th. Canadian Pacific 4-6-2 2317 entered the turntable as Baldwin Locomotive Works 0-6-0 26, Canadian National 2-8-2 3254 and Nickel Plate Road GP9 514 looked on from the roundhouse.

The second half of the Steamtown night photo session featured Lackawanna E8s 807 (ex-PRR 5761A) and 808 (ex-PRR 5702) and Susquehanna E9 2400 (ex-CB&Q 9991).

On July 7th, a Steamtowen double-header led a train from Scranton to Pocono Summit. The return trip was powered by the Lackawanna E8s, with 807 leading the train out of nay Aug Tunnel near Scranton.
