Defects on East Coast Tracks
As a follow up on last months article about railroad
safety, we thought wed let you know about what one of the
major railroads in the United States is doing about the frequent
derailments on the East Coast and what they are doing to fix the
problems.
CSX Transportation announced internal review of its track
maintenance on March 31 after federal RR inspectors found
deteriorating conditions in its system, which is used be
passenger, freight, and commuter trains up and down the East
Coast. The Federal Railroad Administration had begun a special
safely audit of the railroad in February after a series of
derailments. Problems were found in track conditions used by
Amtrak and rail commuter lines and in one case, insufficient
repairs were made after a derailment. The audit found a 60
percent increase in track-caused accidents over five years on the
22,700 mile system, according to a report in the Washington Post.
We must remember that even though, the major railroads are fixing
problems that cause injury, we must still react safely when
driving or playing near train tracks.
