All pictures displayed are video captures from actual program footage unless noted. Program 103 Since its inception, the Illinois Railway Museum, located in Union, Illinois, has become one of the largest railroad museums in the country. The museum was originally conceived to save and operate electric powered interurban cars. Its scope has now expanded to include steam and diesel locomotives as well. Rolling stock such as freight cars and passenger cars are also preserved and operated. Harold Krewer accompanies host Dave Reed on a tour of the grounds. Our visit begins with a ride around the 1.5 mile trolley line on a ex-Chicago Transit Authority PCC streetcar. Then we ride on electric interurban cars from the Chicago, North Shore, and Milwaukee over the museum's 5 mile demonstration railroad. Dave Reed even does a stint as the motorman for the train. Following the break, we visit briefly with Tom Schneider, IRM steam locomotive curator, as he prepares Frisco 1630 for operation in the following year. Then Dave rides and fires an operating steam locomotive and interviews the engine crew. The program concludes with a look at one of the museum's centerpieces, Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy's Nebraska Zephyr. Videotaped in the summer of 1995. |
