Tomytec and Other N-Gauge Power Chassis Dimensions

This is a listing of Tomytec and other power chassis. They are useful for powering not only the rolling stock for which they were intended, but other trolleys, trams, railcars and various "critters" that are scratchbuilt or sold as shells. Their various basic features and dimensions are provided to aid modelers in determining the most suitable power chassis for their needs. For the Tomytec power chassis, I have gone through the laborious process of converting actual millimeter dimensions to scale feet and inches in 1:160, 1:150 and 1:148 scales. Chassis that I have measured myself using digital calipers, or others have measured for me, include TM-01, TM-02, TM-03, TM-04, KD-25, TM-05, TM-07, TM-10, TM-11, TM-19, TM-20, TM-21, TM-22, TM-LRT01, TM-LRT02, TM-LRT03, TM-LRT04, TM-TR01, TM-TR02, TM-TR04 and TM-TR06. TOMYTEC

Tomytec power chassis are made to add power to various Tomytec Tetsudou "Railway Collection" series static display cars. Chassis are produced in limited runs, as needed for new car production runs. They are not kept in continuous production or stock. Tomytec uses nominal metric prototype chassis length classes and a letter code for model truck/bogie axle center spacing: A = 14 mm, B = 16 mm, C = 12 mm and D = 15.4 mm. At times designs are revised and receive an "R" suffix.

EARLY REGULAR CHASSIS

TM-03 chassis shows the general arangement for TM-01, TM-03, TM-02, TM-04 and KD-25, the latter three being longer behind the motor (to the right). A hollowed-out weight snaps on over the brass flywheel to increase tractive effort.

TRAM CHASSIS

The thin TM-TR01 has three possible positions for the unpowered truck (right). The TM-TR04 is simply longer, while the TM-TR03 joins to a second articulated floor chassis instead of having variable truck centers, and the TM-TR05 couples to a trailer chassis with a drawbar.

BACHMANN The similar Bachmann Brill and PCC trolley chassis are oversize, toy-like and of inferior design. I list them because they are common and inexpensive. Their early white axle gears usually split; use only the later improved chassis with black axle gears. Their wheel diameter is 5.6 mm, and Bachmann started blackening the wheels by 2010. The more recent Bachmann Peter Witt chassis is much different - a smaller, more sophisticated design. Factory-equipped with DCC, it can operate under DCC control or analog DC.)
