Lookout is where CSX Transportation's double-track mainline narrows to a single track to cross Lookout Creek, and then splits again, to either enter or bypass Wauhatchie Yard. There is a small park near the intersection of Cummings Highway and Old Wauhatchie Pike that sits above the two tracks and offers a good vantage point of the area with plenty of parking, and best of all in the summer months, plenty of shade. Norfolk Southern's double-track mainline is also visible to the west, as it crosses the CSX tracks heading for either Birmingham or Memphis (the track splits at Wauhatchie).
Lighting conditions are favorable at all times of the day - mornings favor southbound trains (leaving Wauhatchie Yard), whereas evenings favor northbound trains (entering Wauhatchie Yard). The bypass track is often occupied with a parked train awaiting a crew.
